Strategic Overview
The most significant verified operational change was Russia's overnight massed UAV/KAB attack, involving 163 strike UAVs (Shahed, Gerbera, S8000 "Bandrol," and "Parodiya" decoys), approximately half jet-powered, launched from Millerovo, Oryol, Donetsk, and Crimea. Ukrainian air defense claimed 135 targets suppressed or destroyed, but confirmed impacts at 15 locations and debris at 4 others caused civilian casualties in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, and Kharkiv.
In parallel, Ukraine conducted deep strikes disrupting Moscow's Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports (over 120 flights cancelled or delayed; Moscow claimed 47 interceptions, later rising to 114–116), struck a supply vessel at Sochi port, and claimed destruction of a Russian Kasta-2E2 radar. An assassination attempt on Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of Russia's 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, was confirmed by Russian investigators; he remains in critical condition.
No verified frontline territorial changes were reported. Russian territorial claims in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia remain unconfirmed. An armed confrontation between SBU and GUR in Kyiv and the detention of a Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander point to internal Ukrainian security friction.

The Bottom Line
The last 24 hours saw a major Russian air saturation effort causing civilian casualties across multiple oblasts, matched by Ukrainian deep strikes that disrupted Moscow air operations and hit maritime logistics at Sochi. Ground lines remained static, with competing and unverified territorial claims in Kharkiv and Donbas requiring independent confirmation.
Watch items for the next 24 hours:
- Independent verification of claimed Kasta-2E2 radar destruction and Sochi vessel status via satellite imagery or OSINT.
- Confirmation or refutation of Russian Kharkiv claims (Vasilevka/Dolzhanka) and Ukrainian counter-claims near Dvorichna.
- Continuation and sustainability of Russian massed drone/missile waves, and Ukrainian interceptor consumption under the new alert protocol.
- Resolution and operational impact of the SBU-GUR internal confrontation in Kyiv.
Follow-up investigation
InconclusiveQuestion
What does independent satellite or visual evidence show about the outcome of the Ukrainian naval drone attack on Sochi port, specifically whether the supply vessel NEFRIT was hit or sunk and how many unmanned boats were intercepted?
Answer
Independent visual/OSINT evidence available in the pack confirms at least two separate smoke sources or explosions in Sochi port, but does not confirm the destruction of six unmanned boats. It also does not independently confirm that NEFRIT was hit or sunk: Ukrainian Navy and Ukrainian-aligned sources claim the vessel was struck, while OSINT/satellite review did not identify the specific object or damage; AIS tracking still listed NEFRIT in the Black Sea more than twelve hours later, but no current visual damage assessment is provided. The number of intercepted unmanned boats therefore remains unverified beyond the two observed smoke events.
Findings
- ConfirmedHigh confidence
Independent visual/OSINT evidence shows two separate smoke sources in the Sochi port area.
Smoke sources are not equivalent to destroyed boats; the evidence does not identify the cause or number of interceptions.
- Materially refinedMedium confidence
The Russian MoD claim of six destroyed unmanned boats near Sochi is not corroborated by the independent visual/OSINT record, which shows two smoke sources.
A smoke source does not equal a destroyed boat; the actual number of intercepted USVs cannot be determined from these sources.
- InconclusiveMedium confidence
No independent satellite or visual evidence in the pack shows NEFRIT was hit; official Ukrainian-aligned sources claim the vessel was struck, but the observed smoke/explosion record does not identify the vessel or confirm damage.
Absence of visual identification is not evidence of absence; official claims remain unverified by independent imagery.
- InconclusiveMedium confidence
No independent visual or satellite evidence in the pack confirms NEFRIT sank; AIS tracking data indicated the vessel remained in the Black Sea more than twelve hours earlier, but this does not constitute visual damage assessment.
AIS data is not a visual/satellite observation and may be delayed or outdated; absence of sinking imagery is not definitive.
Remaining gaps
- Current satellite imagery of NEFRIT in Sochi port after the attack is not in the pack, so damage or sinking cannot be visually confirmed.
- No independent visual evidence of the number of intercepted unmanned surface vessels beyond two smoke sources.
- No post-strike AIS-derived or visual confirmation of NEFRIT's condition.

Ukrainian naval drone hits Russian-flagged vessel in Sochi port As reported by Ukrinform, the Ukrainian Navy press service said this in a Facebook post. A powerful explosion occurred near the vessel, and smoke was seen rising from the area. Nefrit is part of Russia’s maritime and energy infrastructure. It supported oil and gas operations, serviced offshore facilities, transported cargo and personnel, and carried out underwater engineering work. The vessel’s activities directly supported Russia’s war economy and the financing of its criminal aggression against Ukraine. “Striking Nefrit is a blow to the enemy’s logistics, specialized capabilities and military-economic infrastructure,” the Ukrainian Navy said. As reported by Ukrinform, smoke rose over the port of Sochi in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai on Thursday, September 3, following an attack by an unmanned surface vessel.

The Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported that the port was attacked by naval drones — unmanned boats. The Ukrainian state agency "Ukrinform," citing OSINT analysis from ASTRA, reports that two separate smoke sources were identified in the area of the Sochi seaport based on videos published by eyewitnesses. There were also reports that one of the unmanned boats reached the shore and exploded directly in the port. The Ukrainian military portal "Militarnyi" conducted geolocation of the published photographs and videos and also concluded that the explosions occurred within the port area. One of the videos, according to the publication, captured the explosion of a naval drone near the pier. ## What Could Have Been the Target Among the possible t

Ukrainian Navy strikes Russian support vessel NEFRIT in Sochi port An explosion and smoke were reported at the port of Sochi. (Photo: Supernova+) The Ukrainian Navy struck the multipurpose support vessel NEFRIT in the Russian port of Sochi, the Navy reported on Sept. 3. The Russian-flagged support vessel was hit by an unmanned surface vessel operated by the Ukrainian Navy. The Navy said NEFRIT was part of Russia’s maritime and energy infrastructure. It supported oil and gas operations, serviced offshore facilities, transported cargo and personnel, and carried out underwater technical work. NEFRIT’s operations directly supported Russia’s war economy and helped finance Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Navy said. Telegram channels reported a possible sea drone attack on the Russian port of Sochi overnight on Sept. 3. Astra reported that smoke could be seen in the part of the port where, according to 2024 satellite imagery, a warship had been moored. On Sept. 3, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian Defense Forces units had struck several Russian military targets, including a BK-16 landing craft in Sevastopol.
