Major Military Situation Updates - December 18, 2024, 15:02 UTC
Overall Situation
The conflict in Ukraine remains intense, with Russian forces making significant advances across multiple fronts. The primary areas of conflict are the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions, the Vremivka axis, the Toretsk area, and the Kursk region. Ukrainian defenses have been significantly degraded in several locations, with reports of heavy fighting and significant casualties on both sides. Russian forces have captured several settlements and improved their tactical position across multiple regions. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (VSU) are facing a critical situation, with reports of widespread desertion, significant losses in personnel and equipment, and a new mobilization effort potentially targeting younger age groups. The Ukrainian ombudsman, however, suggests that there are still enough men aged 30-45 to mobilize before considering younger age groups. President Zelensky stated that Ukraine does not need mediators like Hungary and its Prime Minister Orban and emphasized the need for direct relations with the US. Andriy Yermak, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, stated that "real negotiations" about peace with Russia will only begin when Russia no longer has the resources to continue the war. President Zelensky stated that he does not need intermediaries in communicating with Trump.
Explosions were reported in multiple regions due to drone and missile attacks, including Odesa, Dnipro, Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytskyi Oblast. There are new reports of enemy drone activity in Dnipro and Sumy Oblast. New groups of drones are entering Sumy from the north and northeast, approaching Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Starokostiantyniv. Ukrainian forces claim to have shot down 51 out of 81 enemy drones launched on the night of December 17th, with 30 drones "locally lost" without reaching their targets.
Russia conducted a massive missile and drone attack targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. Ukraine reports a massive Russian attack that involved 93 missiles and 200 drones. 81 missiles were shot down, including 11 cruise missiles shot down by F-16. Russia states that this strike was in response to the Ukrainian use of ATACMS missiles near Taganrog. Air raid alerts are active in Mariupol and Pryazovia due to the threat of drones and missiles. Three missiles were shot down over Rostov Oblast, with one hitting a farm building. A residential building was set on fire due to falling fragments from a downed rocket. There were no deaths reported from the missile attacks. Russian air defense systems repelled an attack of 10 missiles over Rostov Oblast.
The length of the active combat line is over 1170 kilometers.
Russian forces are reported to be in control of the initiative and are advancing along the entire front line, despite substantial Western support for the VSU. In 2024, over 190 settlements have reportedly been liberated by Russian forces, with approximately 4,500 sq km of territory coming under Russian control. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has reported that all tasks assigned to the Russian Armed Forces for 2024 have been completed. In 2025, the main training event for the Russian Armed Forces will be the joint strategic exercise "West-2025" with Belarus. NATO has taken over coordination of military aid to Ukraine from the US. The head of the Russian MoD stated that the former defense minister left a significant foundation. He also stated that the system of logistics needed to be modernized, especially in light of the special military operation. Finally, he stated that there was a need to protect arsenals and fuel and lubricants bases from enemy attacks.
European countries are discussing sending up to 100,000 troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire or peace agreement, according to Reuters. The core of the contingent could be formed by a coalition of five to eight countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Britain, and Poland. Their role would be to provide a deterrent effect against further Russian attacks or to monitor compliance with the ceasefire.
