Major Military Situation Updates - December 18, 2024, 12:32 UTC

Overall Situation

The conflict in Ukraine remains intense, with Russian forces making significant advances across multiple fronts. The primary areas of focus are the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions, the Vremivka axis, the Toretsk area, and the Kursk region. Explosions were reported in multiple regions due to drone and missile attacks, including Odesa, Dnipro, Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytskyi Oblast. There are new reports of enemy drone activity in Dnipro and Sumy Oblast. New groups of drones are entering Sumy from the north and northeast, approaching Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Starokostiantyniv. The length of the active combat line is over 1170 kilometers. Russian forces improved their tactical position near Lozovaya, Kharkiv Oblast. Russian forces have occupied Sontsivka. Russian forces have also advanced near Novotroitskoye, Berestki, Zelenivka, Novyi Komar, Storozheve, Pushkino, Dachenske, and Vidrodzhennya. Russian MoD reports the liberation of Trudovoe and Starye Terny in DPR. Russian MoD also claims to have shot down a Polish-made Rosomak APC in the special military operation zone. Russian forces have been conducting an intense offensive in Kursk Oblast for three days, attempting to push Ukrainian forces out of Russian territory. NATO has taken over coordination of military aid to Ukraine from the US. Ukrainian forces claim to have shot down 51 out of 81 enemy drones launched on the night of December 17th, with 30 drones "locally lost" without reaching their targets. Russia conducted a massive missile and drone attack targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. Ukraine reports a massive Russian attack that involved 93 missiles and 200 drones. 81 missiles were shot down, including 11 cruise missiles shot down by F-16. Russia states that this strike was in response to the Ukrainian use of ATACMS missiles near Taganrog. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (VSU) have reportedly lost approximately 1 million soldiers (killed and wounded) and around 20,000 tanks and armored vehicles since the beginning of the special operation. In the Kursk border region, the VSU has reportedly lost over 42,000 personnel and more than 1,800 tanks and armored vehicles. Russian forces are reported to be in control of the initiative and are advancing along the entire front line, despite the substantial Western support for the VSU. In 2024, over 190 settlements have reportedly been liberated by Russian forces, with approximately 4,500 sq km of territory coming under Russian control. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has reported that all tasks assigned to the Russian Armed Forces for 2024 have been completed. In 2025, the main training event for the Russian Armed Forces will be the joint strategic exercise "West-2025" with Belarus.

Assassination of a Russian General and Response

  • Ukrainian sources claim responsibility for the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Russian Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Protection troops in Moscow.
  • US officials stated they were not aware and were not involved in the plan to assassinate Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov.
  • Russian officials confirmed his death, along with his assistant, Major Polikarpov. A homemade bomb with shrapnel was reportedly used.
  • Arrest of Suspect: A 29-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan, suspected of carrying out the attack, has been arrested. He has confessed to being recruited by Ukrainian special services. He was promised $100,000 and relocation to the EU for carrying out the attack. The suspect placed the bomb on an electric scooter near General Kirillov's residence and used a car-sharing vehicle with a camera to monitor the location. The detonation was triggered remotely from Dnipro, Ukraine. The suspect is being investigated by the Uzbek authorities. The suspect had not previously been convicted of any crimes. Uzbekistan has sent information about the detained citizen to Moscow.
  • Medvedev stated that the military-political leadership of the Kyiv regime will face inevitable retribution for the murder of Kirillov and that if The Times considers the murder of Kirillov a legitimate act, then all NATO officials can be considered legitimate targets for Moscow.
  • The Governor of Kostroma Oblast suggested that Kirillov's work exposing secret bio-labs may have been the reason for his assassination.
  • Russian officials will raise the issue of the attack at the UN Security Council on December 20th. The UN did not condemn the attack, stating that all sides should exercise restraint.
  • Maria Zakharova stated that the attack against Kirillov was a result of the West's approval of Kyiv's crimes. She also stated that Russia's response to the 15th package of EU sanctions will not be long in coming.
  • Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, stated that special services are efficiently investigating the murder of Kirillov and that it is obvious that the Kyiv regime is the customer. He further expressed that Putin sends his deep condolences in connection with the death of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and that Russia knows who is the customer of the terrorist attack and that the fight against the Nazi regime will continue. Finally, he stated that the murder of the chief of NBCP troops proves the correctness of Russia's actions during the special operation. In the most recent update, Russian authorities indicated that new suspects might be identified.

Eastern Front

Kurakhove and Pokrovsk

  • Kurakhove Under Heavy Assault: Russian forces control approximately 80% of Kurakhove, including the city council building and all residential areas. Active combat is ongoing, with Russian forces attempting to encircle Ukrainian forces near the Kurakhov thermal power plant and within the city.   • Significant Russian Advances: Russian forces made significant advances, securing the southeastern part of Uspenovka, capturing Annivka, Yelizavetovka, Veselyi Hai, Zholte, and Zarya. They advanced north of Uspenivka along the Kurakhove-Velyka Novosilka highway and south of Kurakhovo near Dalne. South of Kurakhove, Russian forces have completely cleared Uspenovka, Konstantinopolskoe, and Gigant, and continued to attack in the direction of Yantarnoe. Russian forces have liberated 3 sq km near Zelenovka on the Kurakhove axis. Russian forces liberated half of Dachenske on the Pokrovsk axis.
  • Encirclement Efforts: Russian forces are attempting to encircle Ukrainian forces near Makarivka. Russian forces have established themselves in the area of Sukhi Yaly and Zelenivka and will then try to cut the main highway to Kurakhove in the area of the village of Ulakly. Russian forces are advancing towards the center of the "triangle" ZelenovkaUlaklyKonstantinopol, creating another threat of cutting off the GulyaipoleKurakhove road and encircling the Kurakhove group of the enemy. Sumy Oblast

  • Ballistic Missile Launches: Multiple ballistic missiles have been launched towards Odesa from Crimea.
  • Missile Movement: Multiple missiles are passing through the Lviv region in the direction of Stryi, and are also present in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Khmelnytskyi regions.
  • New Missile: A new type of air-to-surface missile is being used in the Kherson region in the direction of Voznesensk and Pervomaisk, and towards Bashtanka.
  • Missile Re-routing: Missiles from Kyiv have changed course and moved to the Vinnitsia region, and from there they moved west near the Khmelnitsky region.
  • Missile Reports: A missile has been reported traveling to Cherkasy from Kyiv region. Missiles are traveling through Zhytomyr and Vinnitsa, heading to the southwest.
  • Cherkasy Region: There is a report that a rocket has been spotted in the Cherkasy region, moving northwest, which then traveled to the Kyiv region before moving to the Vinnytsia region, then changed direction to fly west near Khmelnitsky.
